Good Shepherd Montessori School was founded in 1998 as a ministry of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Vancouver, Washington.
The mission of the school is to offer a high quality Christian-based education which will provide developmental and spiritual guidance to children, grant need-based scholarships dependent on annual funding, and provide families an atmosphere of trust and Christian love.
The school began with 11 students in a morning, week-day program and the Montessori and Catechesis curricula were chosen as our methods of education. An A.M.I. (American Montessori Internationale) primary certified guide and a teaching assistant were hired.
In 1999 GSM earned a Washington State Child Care license and added a full-day kindergarten program. The Church of the Good Shepherd‘s midweek Catechesis program merged with Good Shepherd Montessori in 2006 to create a second classroom. A major remodel of the second classroom was completed in 2009.
Curriculum and program realignment was completed in 2010 so that both classrooms offered Montessori and Catechesis in partial and full week schedules for children ages 2 ½-6 which includes kindergarten. By 2012 GSM had 50 students, two Washington state licensed classrooms, two primary certified Montessori guides, four assistants and one director.
In 2013-14 the school was recognized as a Washington State Department of Learning Early Achiever school with a “Quality Level of Excellence” rating. Good Shepherd Montessori was also recognized for “Area of Specialization in Interactions and Environment”. We are also considered an “Approved Education Program” for the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia.
